Deep Roots, Strong Connections: Our Fall CSA and the Legacy We Carry Forward
At Deep Roots CPS Farm, our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program aims to deliver fresh locally grown seasonal vegetables straight to you & it’s about building the kind of community ties that keep small farms thriving and families well-fed.
We honor Dr. Booker T. Whatley, whose visionary ‘Clientele Membership Club’ inspired today’s CSA movement. His legacy continues to grow in our fields today.
Inspired by Dr. Booker T. Whatley’s Vision
While CSA programs today have various origins, our approach draws inspiration from the work of Dr. Booker T. Whatley, a Black farmer, horticulturist, and Tuskegee University professor who, decades ago, promoted his “Clientele Membership Club.” In his model, customers committed in advance to a farm’s harvest, receiving regular boxes of produce.
For Dr. Whatley, this wasn’t just smart farm economics, it was about relationships. He encouraged farmers to know their members by name, invite them to the farm, and make them part of the story. This same philosophy drives our work at Deep Roots CPS Farm. Our CSA members aren’t just buying food; they’re investing in our mission to be deeply rooted in community, to represent and uplift, and to steward the land for future generations.
